Patchwork Help, Advice, Tips and Tricks
What is a charm pack
A charm pack has of a number of squares specifically cut for patchwork which should all be of a different design or colour. This is a wonderful way of getting a wide selection of pieces or patches to use when making a patchwork quilt. You can actually make a charm quilt with every piece of cotton fabric being different.
The designs or colours of the squares are all different but also the packs vary in size of square and also the number of squares within the pack.
The squares are often 5 inches and these may come in colour themes as well as multi-coloured. A pack with a rainbow of colour is fantastic for a child's quilt especially if combined with novelty squares.
If you are wanting to make something in pink and green for example then some packs in these colours will start you off on your patchwork project.
The pre-cut squares can be extremely useful for bits of colour and design for applique work. Smaller shapes can be cut from the pieces and they are very versatile for many a project.
If you are using the squares to sew together into a quilt remember that, whatever the size of the square, when the quarter-inch seam allowance is used to join the squares the result will be half an inch less than the original cut square. So a 5 inch square will land up being 4 ½ inches within the project and a 4 ½ inch square will be reduced to 4 inches.
