Patchwork Help, Advice, Tips and Tricks
The order of how to make a patchwork quilt
If you want to make a patchwork quilt it is sensible to think about a few things before you start.
First of all you need to decide how big your quilt should be. It must be really frustrating to start making all these pieces for your quilt and then decide you want it to be double the size and not know how to work this out as you have run out of fabric and cannot get that fabric any more.
Although making a quilt should be a creative exercise it is better to be practical and decide who the quilt is for. Try to make the design fit in with the person who is going to be using the quilt. If it is someone who adores spring flowers then a floral quilt in spring colours will be a welcome gift.
Consider your patchwork design and work out how the blocks or design is going to fit together. Remember this may be very simple but still look effective. A good idea is to draw this out on paper and add the measurements to ensure that it is all going to work.
Once you are happy with your design you will need to collect together your patchwork fabrics. You may well have many in your existing stash as all patchwork enthusiasts keep a stash of cotton patchwork fabric which is invaluable at times. Try putting colours together either on your design you have drawn or the fabrics themselves.
Once you have collected your prepared fabrics together and your design is complete you are ready to start your patchwork quilt.
Complete your patchwork quilt top first and then assemble your layers and quilt and lastly bind to finish.
