LOG CABIN BLOCK
The log cabin design makes a versatile block for using in a patchwork quilt.
The small centre square represents the fire of the home and should technically be a warm
colour.
The rest of the block is built round the central square in strips of cotton fabric called
the logs. Two adjacent sides represent the day and the other two sides represent the
night. The colours start off pale in the centre and graduate to stronger and darker on the
outside of the block.
As each block has a dark and pale side the blocks may then be built into a pattern
matching say dark side to dark side and so on.
This is an easy design to stitch on a machine with straight lines and very effective to
look at.
For first time sewing do not cut your logs too narrow. It is easier with wider strips.
It is important to cut your strips very accurately and a rotary cutter, rotary mat and
quilting ruler are invaluable.
