How much wadding to use for your quilting project

When you come to put your finished patchwork quilt top on to your wadding and backing you will find it a great deal easier if your wadding and indeed backing are a few inches larger than the quilt top.

If your quilt is very large it is as well to have around 4 inches extra around each edge. It can be quite difficult to place your layers of quilt together but this is made far easier by having a few inches to play with around the edges. So make sure that you take the width of your quilt top and add around 8 inches being 4 inches for each side and then the length of your quilt plus 8 inches for 4 inches top and bottom.

If your quilt is smaller you will be able to reduce the extra from the 4 inches but you still need to have a small amount of working room with your wadding and backing. The last thing you want is to start quilting and discover that slight movement has left a piece without any wadding or backing.

Of course when you have all the layers positioned and held together you can go ahead and do your quilting with the extra wadding etc. still on the edges. When that is finished you will trim off any excess from the edges so that you can bind your quilt to complete.
